1930s kitchen update

These clients wanted to preserve their original 1930s cabinets and counters while making the kitchen more useful.Golden Hands Construction, of Bloomington, Indiana, referred the clients to NR Hiller Design for help with planning the kitchen update and to build new cabinets that would harmonize with the originals. The new counters are 38” high, to suit the taller of the clients, and have butcher-block tops, at the clients’ request.
The new cabinets feature traditional inset frame-and-panel doors but incorporate shelves on pull-out hardware. Chrome-plated hinges salvaged from another 1930s kitchen, combined with reproduction chromed knobs, perfectly complement the original cabinetry. Paint is a 1930s silvery green. The apron-front sink was elegantly fitted into the original 1930s basketweave-pattern tiled counter by Golden Hands Construction.
